MSU began as a university college (KUTPM) in 2001. In October of 2007, after a full university status was conferred, the university adopted a new name - MSU. The full university status is an important milestone achieved by MSU as it demonstrates its growth to prominence in the tertiary education sector in Malaysia.
The birth and success of MSU has been attributed to the success of its collegiate institutions, the PTPL group which made its debut three decades ago. Besides achieving a few firsts in the local education landscape, PTPL which has a student body of 17,000 has been consistently strong in several critical areas of studies. The Group’s role in providing quality and industry relevant education has been well received by those who have earned its qualifications.
The establishment of MSU is also considered timely as the nation progresses towards attaining a developed nation status by 2020. Our focus in the relevant and critical areas as well as research and development in these areas will help spur knowledge and ideas that will put Malaysia on course towards achieving the developed nation objective.
Geared towards academic excellence and providing academic programmes of international repute is the mainstay of our existence. We are inspired to maintain the quality and relevance of our teaching methodologies in our single-minded quest to develop our students into accomplished individuals.
What Makes Us Special?
MSU aspires to be the leading university of choice for specialized and professional education, providing holistic academic standards which are relevant to the needs of the industry and meeting global expectations whilst maintaining the highest ethical standards.
MSU provides quality education at very competitive costs with English as the medium of instruction. With a low student/faculty ratio, academic counselling and smaller classes, students have many opportunities to develop mentoring relationships on campus with professors and staff.
Considerable attention is also paid to curriculum design, flexibility, and the introduction of innovative and interesting learning methods. Through a tracer study conducted, about 95% of MSU’s graduates joined the workforce within the first six months after graduation.
There are three faculties, three schools, and three centres of studies offering pre-university study, diploma, degree and postgraduate courses. All programmes offered are either approved/accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).
The faculties, schools and centres of studies are:
Student Support Services & Student Development Activities
The Students & Career Development (SCD) department complements the faculties and centres of learning of the university in the areas of students’ personal and professional development. Its role is seen as an enhancer of students’ character building through the activities that it organizes. Career-based activities which are aimed at sharpening students’ organizational skills and personal competencies are a common feature throughout any academic year. The SCD also serves as a hub for campus life as a variety of events are jointly organised between the department and the various clubs and associations under its purview. The department provides counseling and assistance on general welfare of students, housing and alumni networking.
International Students Exchange Programme (ISEP)
MSU’s ISEP is in line with the university‘s vision of becoming a regional and global institution. There are over 40 universities from the ASEAN region, Australia, the United Kingdom, the United Sates, Japan, India, Indonesia, Eastern Europe and South Africa which are currently under the ISEP list. MSU students who are interested to be located in any of these 40 universities are advised to contact the ISEP unit of MSU.
Scholarships & Financial Aid
MSU allocates RM3 million each year as financial assistance to needy students. The funds are disbursed through various initiative and collaborative efforts between MSU and several of its public and private institutional partners. The following are the scholarships available:
MSU’s very own President’s Scholarship is one of such schemes that has over the years benefited many students. This is an award given to students who demonstrate outstanding academic achievements and come from a financially challenged background.
Media & External Organisations
Joint scholarship schemes such as Skor Berita Harian, Utusan Malaysia, The Star Scholarship Funds, and UMNO Youth Scholarship are some examples of MSU’s involvement in ensuring that the less fortunate get to continue their education at MSU. The scholarship is open to all Malaysians and the financial assistance awarded ranges from a full to partial scholarships. Details of the scholarship and application forms are available at the Registrar’s office.
MSU also provides assistance to students of all levels in obtaining loans from government bodies such as PTPTN (National Higher Education Fund), MARA (Majlis Amanah Rakyat) and other sponsoring bodies.
